The Basics of Vision Therapy

Vision therapy helps train your muscles, brain, and eyes, which form your visual system, to work as a team. Visual dysfunction can occur when there is a miscommunication between parts of that visual system or poor neural signals to the various extraocular muscles used to move and coordinate the eyes or the focusing muscles of the eye.

Signs of Visual Dysfunction

Visual dysfunction can appear in a variety of ways:

  • Double vision
  • Intermittent blurred vision
  • Difficulty changing focus from distance to close up
  • Headaches after reading
  • Becoming tired or falling asleep while reading
  • Closing one eye while reading
  • Skipping words, needing to re-read words or losing your place while reading
  • Poor reading comprehension

Our Vision Therapy Methods

Brain injuries like concussions can cause vision problems in up to 82% of patients. Our concussion vision rehabilitation clinic offers options for treating vision errors that may occur after an injury through the use of vision therapy. We use a multidisciplinary approach working closely with physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and other professionals to help integrate the proprioception (balance) system, vestibular (motion and acceleration) system and visual system and reduce post-concussion symptoms returning patients to activities of daily living.

Strabismus and amblyopia is a condition in which a weakness develops in the muscles in the eye, resulting in crossed or wandering eyes. Vision therapy may help correct the muscle imbalance. At Bayside Eye Care we are able to use advanced vision therapy techniques instead of traditional drops or patched to treat these conditions. These techniques can help greatly reduce the need for surgical correction in many cases.

Can You Use Contact Solution as Eye Drops?

Dry Eye

Many people wonder if contact solutions can double as eye drops in an emergency due to their similar appearance and purpose. However, this is not advisable. Contact solution is designed specifically for cleaning, disinfecting, and storing contact lenses, and its composition is different from that of eye drops, which are formulated to hydrate and soothe the eyes. While using contact solution in your eyes might not cause immediate harm, it may not provide the comfort or relief you’re seeking.
